Prof. Mark Towler
Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Dr. Towler is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University (appointed February 2013). Prior to this, he was a Visiting Professor at University Malaya (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2012-2013) and before this he was chair of Biomaterials at Alfred University (Alfred, NY, 2009-2012). He has a PhD in Biomaterials from Queen Mary College (University of London, UK) and spent some of his early career working in the healthcare industry prior to returning to academia at the University of Limerick (Limerick, Ireland) in 1999. He set up the Clinical Materials Unit in Limerick in 2005 whose remit was to undertake applied medical research. To date this has resulted in two companies spinning off the research streams, Crescent Diagnostics Limited and Bearna Medical. Towler has published over 100 peer reviewed papers, an equal amount of conference proceedings. He has four granted patents and has secured over $10m of research funding and has graduated eight Ph.D students.
