Prof. Mark Towler
Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Dr. Towler is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University (appointed February 2013) with a cross-appointment as an affiliate scientist in St Michael’s Hospital. Prior to this, he was the Inamori Professor of Biomaterials at Alfred University (Alfred, NY, 2009-2012). He has a PhD in Biomaterials from Queen Mary College (University of London, UK) and spent his early career working in the healthcare industry prior to returning to academia at the University of Limerick (Limerick, Ireland) in 1999.
Towler is the inventor of an in-vitro diagnostic, Osentia (www.osentia.co.uk), sold in the UK through Crescent Ops. He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers (h-index, 28) and an equal amount of conference proceedings. He holds five granted patents and has secured over C$23m of research funding including recent grants from the CIHR Project program (2018 and 2016 calls), the NSERC I2I program (2018) and the NSERC/CIHR CHRP program (2014 and 2016 calls). He has graduated 16 Ph.D and 16 MASc students and mentored 17 Post-Doctoral Fellows. He currently oversees a research group of 14 (11 graduate students and three post doctoral fellows).
Towler was recently awarded the ICUF James M Flaherty Visiting Professor position for 2018.
